HISTORY: Zita is a rarity in the horse world. Born as part of a set of twins, her and her sister were both exceptionally healthy. This turned out to be quite the boon for their farm as they cared more about producing horses, more importantly winning horses, than the actual welfare of the animals. They were cared for, fed, watered, treated but the people cared more about making money and champions than making sure their horses were happy and healthy – beyond what it took to stay sound enough to run. And those that couldn’t run, well their fate was much worse than those that did. It was not an uncommon sight to see those that just couldn’t cut it on the track anymore be loaded up on a van or shipping truck to never be seen again. Deep down the others knew where these horses went and what happened to them, perhaps it was a scent of fear and desperation that clung to the people and steel horse boxes, and Zita decided she would never allow that to happen to her.
From a young age Zita showed that she certainly had the spirit of a winner and this was just fostered and expanded upon to the point that she was rank. She received the same kind of harsh, heavy handed treatment as her sister which simply made her more resentful of those around her. However, being the smaller of the two mares her training was kept at home longer than her sister. While not in public her experience on the track only continued to foster her attitude and dislike for other horses. She did everything she could to push herself to run harder and be faster than the others and would frequently try to force any other horse near her out of the way. If she could run into another horse, trip them up, cause them to fall back in any way she would.
Once she was finally deemed ready to be in public like Tray she was taken to the track to be “shown off” on the same day as Tray’s incident. Zita never got the chance to run that day though. She had spent an unusually long time tied up waiting to go out on the track and when she saw her sister being led back from the track in the condition she was in she had her own fit. Throwing her weight around she managed to snap the ties that held her, flipping over on the hard ground before running to her sister’s side. Biting and striking at the humans like a vicious tornado she drove at least one to the ground before she was muscled back under control. The decision was made that instant that both fillies were insane and unfit to continue racing, at least for their current owner, and were put up for sale that instant; a decision that was made simply because he knew that with their bloodlines he could make more money selling them alive than by the pound. Yet, this decision was taken out of the man’s hands when the true condition of the fillies was discovered by the track vets.
When the hands at the track managed to get a hold of Zita and separate her from her twin they managed to get her into a stall in order to investigate her as well. While breaking loose and falling she had scraped herself up and it appeared that she had pulled and strained several muscles in her struggles. She was by far less injured than her sister, but her old healing wounds and scars told a similar story. Both fillies had grown up with the same treatment and abuse. Zita was covered in the same kinds of scars and was tender past what her fresh injuries would have caused. They were both confiscated from their owner and a full “investigation” was begun against him and his entire operation. However, the separation from her sister was difficult for the filly and any other horse that they tried to pair with her ended up with fresh bites and kicks until they finally left her alone to fret and worry.
The day they were finally reintroduced was the happiest day of Zita’s life. She had been worried the unspeakable had happened to her sister so the day they were allowed to come together again lifted a huge weight of worry from the young filly’s shoulders. Yet, she was in the same situation as her twin. No local trainers were willing to work with the cursed pair, and no owners wanted to risk the liability of owning either one so along with Tray, Zita was offered for sale overseas with full disclosure. She was just as damaged as her sister, but her reluctance to step onto the boat was fear induced, just as her refusal to step hoof into a trailer was fueled by fear. A similar catch pen was set up for her and as expected she practically flew off of the boat, crashing into the panels of the pen before they managed to force her back into a trailer to bring her to her new home, in hopes of beginning a new life.
PERSONALITY: Zita is a hard headed and difficult filly. While she is infinitely easier to deal with than her twin, Tray, she still isn’t the kind of horse you turn your back on. She is slightly pleasant around people than other horses. In all actuality the only other horse she seems to be able to stand being in close proximity with is her sister. She is highly protective of and bonded to her sister and hates seeing her distressed. Tray is the only horse she seems to care about and will move heaven and earth to “protect” her sister whether she needs it or not.
It has proven to be very difficult to get her tacked up for a race. She resists and fights as much as she can when being saddled and even worse when being bridled. Zita is also a master at stepping out or away from a rider just as they begin to mount up, making it difficult to even get on her back. However, once out on the track she has a “do whatever it takes” attitude and has been known to foul other horses just to come in first. She doesn’t understand that that is more detrimental to her racing than just running a clean race, to her if she crosses the line first she is victorious and that is all she cares about. She takes a very calm and experienced hand when being ridden as she will do everything she can to savage the other horses in a race with her. The best strategy is to keep her wide and out of traffic or in front of the others so that she is not distracted by her extreme dislike of having others near her. She enjoys racing and the thrill of the run, just not everything else that comes with it.
